General Staff: Russia has lost 1,265,130 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022
Ukraine's General Staff reported that Russia has lost over 1.26 million troops since the invasion began on February 24, 2022, with significant equipment losses as well.
In a detailed report released on February 27, Ukraine's General Staff of the Armed Forces highlighted the staggering losses suffered by Russian military forces since the onset of the full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022. According to the report, Russian troop casualties have reached an alarming figure of approximately 1,265,130, including 1,280 in just the past day. This unprecedented scale of loss underscores the heavy toll the conflict has taken on the Russian military and indicates a potentially prolonged conflict ahead as Russia continues to engage in heavy operations throughout Ukraine.
The report also enumerates significant equipment losses incurred by Russia, detailing the destruction of 11,706 tanks, 24,097 armored combat vehicles, over 80,000 vehicles and fuel tanks, and thousands of artillery and rocket systems. Moreover, Russia has lost 435 aircraft and 348 helicopters during the conflict, as well as a substantial number of operational-tactical drones and naval assets. Such figures suggest not only a manpower crisis but also a dire depletion of critical military resources, raising questions about Russia's ability to sustain its military operations in Ukraine moving forward.
In contrast, the Ukrainian military opted not to disclose its own casualty figures, citing the need for operational secrecy. However, independent Western think tanks have corroborated the Ukrainian claims regarding Russian losses, indicating that Russian casualties may indeed exceed those of Ukraine. This discrepancy in disclosed losses highlights the challenges both militaries face in the ongoing conflict, particularly in the recovery of fallen soldiers and the management of operational security amidst intense fighting, especially with the ongoing use of drones in combat operations.
