General Staff: Russia has lost 1,250,950 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022
Ukraine's General Staff reports that Russia has lost approximately 1.25 million troops since the start of the invasion in February 2022, with additional losses in equipment and vehicles.
The General Staff of Ukraine's Armed Forces has provided an update on Russia's military losses in the ongoing conflict, stating that as of February 13, 2023, Russia has incurred losses of around 1,250,950 troops since its full-scale invasion of Ukraine began on February 24, 2022. This staggering figure demonstrates the extent of the toll the conflict has taken on Russian forces, with reports indicating that 800 of those casualties occurred within just the past day. Such high numbers raise questions about the sustainability of Russia's military campaign in Ukraine.
In addition to troop losses, the report detailed Russia's significant losses in military equipment, further underscoring the challenges faced by its armed forces. Russian forces have reportedly lost a total of 11,667 tanks, 24,028 armored fighting vehicles, 78,268 vehicles and fuel tanks, and 37,254 artillery systems. The loss of advanced weaponry, including 1,642 multiple launch rocket systems and 1,300 air defense systems, will likely impact the operational capability of Russian military operations in Ukraine.
This information comes as part of the ongoing analysis of the conflict, reflecting both the human and material costs of the war for Russia. The massive numbers of drones and aircraft lost—133,392 drones, 435 airplanes, and 347 helicopters—further illustrate the high price Russia is paying in an attempt to assert control in Ukraine. As the conflict endures, these statistics highlight the potential for prolonged engagement and the significant implications for both Ukraine and Russia's future military strategies.
