Man arrested for maintaining cockfighting in MT; 14 injured animals rescued

A man was arrested in Várzea Grande, Brazil, for running an illegal cockfighting operation where 14 injured birds were rescued.

A man was arrested on Thursday in the metropolitan region of Cuiabá, Brazil, for operating a cockfighting setup in Várzea Grande. Law enforcement officers from the Specialized Delegation for the Environment (Dema) acted on a tip-off regarding illegal activities on a property located on Estrada do Engordador. Upon their arrival, they found a stable housing not only roosters but also hens and chicks, with the man identifying himself as the owner of the animals and the premises.

During the inspection, authorities observed that several roosters had visible injuries, including cut combs and spurs, as well as other wounds indicative of fighting. In addition to the birds, officers seized various items associated with cockfighting, including a fighting arena, ventilation equipment, syringes, vitamins, an incubator with eggs, and artificial spurs. This points to a well-established operation, not just a casual or isolated incident.

The case highlights ongoing concerns regarding animal welfare and illegal fighting rings in Brazil, as cockfighting is a brutal practice, and those involved often face severe legal repercussions. The official forensic team was called to the scene to document and investigate further, underscoring the seriousness of the violations involved in this situation.
