A man in Brazil was fined R$ 651 thousand and arrested for keeping dozens of roosters for illegal fighting in a property described as a 'hotel'.
In Jarinu, São Paulo, a 42-year-old man was arrested and fined R$ 651,000 for keeping multiple roosters meant for illegal fighting. This practice constitutes animal cruelty under Brazilian law. The police conducted an operation that revealed the man had transformed a property into a so-called 'hotel' where the roosters were kept to be trained for frequent fights.
During the raid, the police seized artificial spurs, various medications, and equipment used to treat injuries sustained by the fighting birds, indicating that the animals were being systematically prepared for further bouts. Promotional banners for cockfighting events were also discovered on-site, highlighting the organized nature of the illicit operation. Despite the seizure, the roosters remained in the custody of the suspect, who has been designated a custodian, under the supervision of the municipal environmental police.
The Civil Police have stated that their investigation is ongoing, with efforts aimed at identifying other individuals involved in this criminal scheme. The incident underscores a significant focus in Brazil on addressing animal cruelty, particularly in the context of illegal animal fighting, highlighting the legal and ethical issues surrounding such practices in the country.
