A cockfighting arena in Pauiní, Amazonas, was shut down by police, leading to the rescue of over 20 birds during Operation Icarus, which resulted in the detention of 17 individuals.
In a significant crackdown on illegal cockfighting in Brazil, police shut down an arena in Pauiní, situated in the Amazonas region, during Operation Icarus. The operation took place on Sunday, leading to the rescue of 23 birds that were being used for clandestine fights. Additionally, police seized money from illegal betting, veterinary steroids, and fighting equipment at the scene. This enforcement action highlights the ongoing issues surrounding animal cruelty and public health risks associated with such events.
The authorities detained 17 individuals found at the arena. According to delegate Renan Boina de Barbe, the operation revealed severe sanitary risks connected to such gatherings. The detained persons were taken to the local police station for clarification and were later released after signing a commitment to appear in court. They face serious charges, including animal cruelty and illegal gambling, while also being investigated for possible violations of public health regulations.
The rescued birds have been handed over to the Municipal Secretary of the Environment (SEMMA) for their welfare and rehabilitation. This incident marks a critical effort by law enforcement to address animal abuse and uphold legal standards, reflecting Brazil's more robust stance against illegal gambling activities and their accompanying social issues, ensuring both animal welfare and public health are prioritized.
