The State Security Service initiates criminal prosecution for glorifying Russia's war crimes and inciting hatred
The Latvian State Security Service has proposed criminal charges against an individual for publicly glorifying Russian war crimes and inciting national and ethnic hatred.
The State Security Service (VDD) of Latvia has initiated proceedings that suggest the prosecution of an individual for publicly justifying and glorifying war crimes committed by Russia, alongside inciting national and ethnic hatred. This case was brought to light after a preliminary investigation that began on October 30 of the previous year, focusing on allegations related to articles of the Penal Code concerning genocide, crimes against humanity, and incitement of national and ethnic hatred.
As the investigation unfolded, it was revealed that the individual in question had utilized messaging platform 'Telegram' and other social media to circulate content that not only justified the war crimes perpetrated by Russia in Ukraine but also propagated messages that incited hatred and discord against Latvians and Ukrainians. This raises significant concerns about the impact of such content on social cohesion within Latvia, especially given the country's history and current geopolitical climate.
On December 7, 2022, following the investigation, the VDD conducted operational activities at two locations connected to the suspect in Riga and Ogre, where they seized multiple data storage devices for further analysis. This move underscores the VDD's commitment to combating hate speech and preserving national security amidst rising tensions related to ongoing conflicts involving Russia.
