The Security Service is urging to charge a person for justifying Russian war crimes on Telegram and other platforms
The Latvian Security Service is recommending charges against a Russian citizen for justifying Russian war crimes in Ukraine through social media platforms.
The Latvian Security Service (VDD) has initiated a criminal process against a Russian citizen residing in Latvia on October 30 of the previous year. The service's investigation revealed that the accused used the messaging application Telegram, along with other platforms, to publish several posts that justified war crimes committed by Russia in Ukraine. Additionally, the individual spread numerous messages inciting hatred and discord against Latvians and Ukrainians.
Further investigation conducted by the VDD on December 7 included procedural actions at two locations associated with the accused in Riga and Ogre, where several data carriers were seized for further examination. These actions highlight the seriousness with which Latvia treats the dissemination of harmful narratives that undermine solidarity and peace within its borders, especially in the context of ongoing geopolitical tensions due to the conflict in Ukraine.
The accused has been placed under arrest as a precautionary measure. This case reflects broader concerns about free speech, the impact of disinformation, and the legal implications of justifying acts of aggression and violations of international law, which resonate deeply in the current political climate where nations are taking stringent actions to combat hate speech and ensure security against external threats.
