Russia recruits criminals for sabotage operations in Latvia – Latvian security chief

The Latvian State Security Service has disclosed that Russia is recruiting criminals for sabotage operations targeting the country's military and critical infrastructure.

The Director General of the Latvian State Security Service, Normunds Mežviets, has revealed alarming information regarding Russia’s recruitment of individuals with criminal backgrounds for sabotage operations in Latvia. Mežviets indicated that these operations primarily focus on military facilities and critical infrastructure, underscoring the threat posed by Russian intelligence agencies in the region. Such tactics are part of a broader strategy by Russia to destabilize and undermine the security of Latvia.

Mežviets reported that several incidents have occurred in Latvia over the past year, which are currently under investigation for possible ties to Russian intelligence activities. Although none of these incidents have caused significant harm to national security, they are being treated with utmost seriousness. One notable incident involved a group that was discovered to have set fire to a facility linked to a defense project, highlighting the potential ramifications of such sabotage efforts on Latvia’s security landscape.

The security chief also mentioned ongoing threats aimed at Ukrainian assets within Latvia, including plots to attack vehicles identified with Ukrainian plates at crucial infrastructure sites. This situation reflects the heightened tensions in the Baltic region, particularly given the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, and poses a broader concern for regional stability as Latvia remains vigilant against such espionage and subversive activities.
