Bicentennial Road Project of $300 Million in Pichincha to Be Reactivated with Reforms

The Pichincha Prefecture is seeking to relaunch the Bicentennial road solution, a $300 million project aimed at improving traffic flow in Quito.

The Prefecture of Pichincha is taking steps to reactivate the Bicentennial Road Project, which is valued at around $300 million and aims to involve private sector participation in its execution. A public tender was presented in April 2024 at a hotel in northern Quito, where details about the project were shared, and a model was displayed. Despite around 100 attendees at the event, the tender was declared void, indicating challenges in attracting bidders or interest in the project.

The main goal of the Bicentennial road solution is to connect the General Rumiñahui Highway with northern Quito, addressing significant traffic congestion and reducing travel times for residents. The project was initiated by the Pichincha Prefecture through Hidroequinoccio EP, which is a public enterprise under the local government’s jurisdiction. By improving infrastructure and creating better connectivity, the project aims to alleviate pressing transportation issues in the rapidly growing urban area.

The proposed infrastructure highlights the construction of a 680-meter viaduct with four lanes over the Machángara River, connecting to two two-lane tunnels through the adjacent hills. This ambitious project represents a crucial investment in Quito’s transportation framework, potentially reshaping commuting patterns and enhancing accessibility to vital areas. Furthermore, the success of such a reactivation would depend on effective public-private partnerships and community support for improved mobility solutions in the region.
