Gaeco targets gang in RJ that sold fake health plans using name of operator from the interior of SP
A criminal organization in Rio de Janeiro has been dismantled for selling fraudulent health insurance plans, misleading victims by using the name of a legitimate provider from São Paulo.
The Gaeco (Special Action Group to Combat Organized Crime) from São José do Rio Preto, São Paulo, initiated a significant operation against a criminal gang operating in Rio de Janeiro. This organization had been selling fraudulent health insurance plans under the name of a reputable company from the interior of São Paulo. The police executed search and arrest warrants in two cities, São Gonçalo and Niterói, targeting the suspects involved in this elaborate scam.
Investigations revealed that the gang had established three companies to facilitate their deception, with headquarters spread across São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Espírito Santo. From 2024 to 2025, they marketed these fake health plans nationwide, both for individuals and groups, while providing victims with bogus insurance cards that appeared authentic. The extent of the fraud has raised concerns as victims typically only found out about the scam when they required medical attention, exposing the severe implications of the group's actions.
Victims were misled into paying an enrollment fee along with monthly premiums, yet they were left without any actual health coverage. The true number of individuals affected by this scheme remains unclear, and the operation is being supported by the Military Police of Brazil, highlighting the seriousness of the situation and the necessity for law enforcement's intervention in combating such organized crime activities in the health insurance sector.
