The first part of the largest military range in the Baltics has been completed

The first phase of the largest military training range in the Baltics, located in Latvia, has been completed, providing a much-needed space for military exercises.

The first section of the largest military training range in the Baltics, known as the Selija range in Latvia, has been finalized. This area includes a battlefield shooting training zone and is already hosting international drone tests. This new facility is crucial for Latvia and other Baltic nations as the existing Adaži training center near Riga has become congested, making it difficult to secure time for training exercises. The Selija range offers ample space for future brigade-level drills, an area that was previously just forest just a few years ago.

Currently, 15,600 hectares, which is just over 60 percent of the planned site, are completed with an investment of 36.5 million euros. The Selija range is unique across the Nordic countries because it allows for realistic battlefield situations to be practiced during exercises. The first phase of the project includes three shooting ranges, ammunition storage, and a logistics center, which are essential elements to enhance military preparedness.

This development marks the establishment of the largest training center for the Baltic States, capable of accommodating brigade-level exercises. This implies that NATO's large-scale training operations will also benefit from this new facility, reinforcing military cooperation and readiness among the Baltic nations as they seek to enhance their defense capabilities amidst ongoing regional tensions.
