The military training area for combat shooting at the «Sēlija» military polygon opened with demonstrations

The first phase of the Sēlija military polygon's development includes essential logistics and training facilities costing approximately €36.5 million, aiming for larger NATO exercises in Latvia.

The Sēlija military polygon in Latvia has reached a significant milestone with the opening of its combat shooting training area, a development phase that includes the establishment of logistic support zones, ammunition storage facilities, and multiple shooting ranges. The first phase covers over 15 hectares of land, approximately 61% of the planned area, reflecting a major investment of about €36.5 million to enhance military readiness. This investment is crucial for accommodating increased NATO training activity in response to evolving defense needs.

Latvian President Edgars Rinkēvičs emphasized the strategic importance of this development for both Latvian armed forces and NATO allies, indicating that these facilities are not merely for demonstration but serve as essential training grounds for military preparation. The presence of state-of-the-art training and storage facilities will enhance Latvia’s capability to host large-scale international military exercises, a significant feature of the Sēlija polygon aimed at strengthening collective defense efforts.

The Defense Minister, Andris Sprūds, acknowledged the advantages of the extensive area at Sēlija for conducting effective, large-scale NATO exercises, noting that this initiative is central to Latvia's strategic defense objectives. The plans also include the construction of a military base with barracks for 1,200 soldiers by 2029, focusing on improving not just national but also allied military infrastructure, highlighting Latvia's commitment to enhancing regional security and cooperation within NATO.
