A 108-Meter Diameter Ice Carousel Has Been Established on the Anne Canal in Tartu
A new ice carousel measuring 108 meters in diameter has been created on the Anne Canal in Tartu, introduced to celebrate the 108th anniversary of the Republic of Estonia.
In Tartu, a community project has brought back an ice carousel to the Anne Canal, measuring an impressive 108 meters in diameter, crafted in honor of the Republic of Estonia's 108th anniversary. This carousel marks a significant revival of the tradition, especially as the conditions on the Emajõgi River have become dangerous due to fragile ice, making the Anne Canal a safer alternative for winter festivities. The creation of the ice carousel involved approximately two hours of measurement and an additional four and a half hours of sawing, showcasing collective effort and celebration of local craftsmanship. The designer Andrei Kulagin reflected on the project's historic importance, noting that the first carousel was built when Estonia marked its 100th anniversary, and this year’s record-breaking size speaks to the community's ongoing creativity and ambition. The ice carousel not only represents a unique artistic expression but also brings joy and excitement to both locals and visitors, creating a memorable winter experience filled with adrenaline. Its longevity will depend on the weather, and while there are considerations for maintaining this tradition, there are also concerns about how many more of such large installations are feasible in the years to come.
