140,000 Ton Giant Completed in the Middle of a Lake

The world's largest ice carousel has been completed on the surface of Lappajärvi, a giant measuring 602 meters in diameter and weighing 140,000 tons.

The world’s largest ice carousel has been successfully constructed on the surface of Europe’s largest crater lake, Lappajärvi. This impressive structure has a diameter of 602 meters and weighs a staggering 140,000 tons, which is equivalent to approximately three Silja Symphony cruise ships. The thickness of the ice being cut varied between 45 and 80 centimeters, and the project was overseen by ice carousel master Janne Käpylehto and his team of about twenty individuals. The previous Guinness World Record for an ice carousel was also made in Lappajärvi in 2023 by Käpylehto’s team, measuring 515.76 meters in diameter. This record was later challenged by a 540-meter ice carousel constructed in the United States, but it has not yet been recognized by Guinness as a legitimate record. Käpylehto provided a concrete example to demonstrate the weight of this new giant carousel, emphasizing its remarkable size and the engineering efforts behind its creation. Overall, the construction of this ice carousel marks a significant achievement in ice sculpture and entertainment, showcasing the community's ability to create records while promoting the beauty and uniqueness of Lappajärvi. It not only serves as a tourist attraction but also highlights the importance of ice in local culture and the innovative spirit of the people involved in the project.
