Liepaja's European Capital of Culture program is gearing up for its official opening on January 22, 2027, with a series of events planned for January 23 across the city. Under the direction of Matiss Kazha, an outdoor concert performance titled 'City Symphony' will be a highlight alongside an indoor ceremony called 'Wind Symphony', planned by director Laura Groza. Notably, composer Eriks Ešenvalds has been commissioned to create a new work for this significant occasion, setting the stage for a vibrant cultural celebration.
The program, titled '(In)peace', will encompass a diverse array of music, contemporary art, interdisciplinary events, and community initiatives. It aims to address themes relevant not only to Liepaja and its surroundings but also to broader European contexts. With five thematic lines, the program seeks to engage the public and foster community involvement while spotlighting the region's cultural richness.
As Liepaja prepares for its role as a European Capital of Culture, the significance of this initiative extends beyond local festivities. It highlights the city's commitment to cultural dialogue and artistic expression, positioning Liepaja as a vital player in the European cultural landscape and inviting participation from various stakeholders which is anticipated to impact tourism, local identity, and cultural exchange in the coming years.
