Having your own business is the biggest dream of the periphery for 2026, says research

A recent survey reveals that owning a business is the top aspiration among residents of vulnerable communities in Brazil for 2026.

A new survey, known as the Dreams of the Favela 2026 conducted by Data Favela, indicates that owning a business is the primary ambition for 38% of individuals living in vulnerable Brazilian communities. This study not only assesses living conditions but also seeks to understand the aspirations of these residents as they look toward the future. In addition to entrepreneurship, 24% of participants expressed a desire to pursue work they are passionate about, while 16% aim for public sector jobs.

Cleo Santana, president of the institute and director of the Favela Business School, points out that the high percentage of those wanting to start their own business reflects profound entrepreneurial spirit but also highlights systemic deficiencies. She explains that in the absence of effective formal market inclusion policies, many turn to entrepreneurship as a necessary means of survival. The term 'sevirΓ΄metro' used in local vernacular illustrates the drive of residents to 'turn things around' and generate income amidst challenging economic conditions.

The survey was conducted in collaboration with Data Goal, emphasizing that the dreams of these communities are tightly interwoven with their current socioeconomic realities. While the desire for entrepreneurship is evident, there is an underlying need for structural support to help realize these dreams. The findings prompt a consideration of how investing in these aspirations could lead to stronger community resilience and improved economic opportunities for marginalized groups in Brazil.
