Egypt.. Government Decision to Establish a College for the Quran at the Request of the Sheikh of Al-Azhar

The Egyptian government has decided to establish a College of the Quran for boys and girls at Al-Azhar University in response to a request from the Sheikh of Al-Azhar.

The Al-Azhar Mosque has announced the establishment of a "College of the Quran and its Readings and Sciences" for boys and a similar institution for girls in Nasr City, Cairo, with classes set to commence in the upcoming academic year. This initiative follows the approval of Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly, who acted upon the request of Sheikh Ahmed al-Tayyib, with the intention of promoting Al-Azhar's moderate teachings.

The demand for the establishment of this college is part of Al-Azhar's broader vision to support its philosophy of 'State of Recitation', which has flourished under the guidance of Al-Azhar's students and Quranic scholars. The college will aim to enhance academic and spiritual education centered on Quranic recitation and related sciences.

The official decision published by the Cabinet outlines the creation of two branches: one for boys located within the College of Islamic Propagation in Cairo and the other for girls within the College of Islamic and Arabic Studies for Girls, also in Cairo. Education at both branches will begin with the 2026/2027 academic year, marking a significant move in reinforcing the educational framework surrounding Quranic studies in Egypt.
