Curitiba has a deficit of more than 260 thousand trees, survey points out; find out how to request planting on your street

A survey by the city hall shows that Curitiba has a potential deficit of over 262,000 trees available for planting across its regions.

A recent survey conducted by the Curitiba city hall indicates that the city currently has around 318,000 trees lining its streets, yet there is a significant deficit of over 262,000 trees that could be planted in the available spaces. This information comes from the Municipal Urban Tree Planting Plan, which outlines planning guidelines for the implementation and management of urban greenery throughout the capital. The study highlights the various deficits in tree planting across the city's different administrative regions.

The assessment of the planting deficit is based on several factors, including the total length of sidewalks in Curitiba, which exceeds 9,000 kilometers, and an ideal average spacing of 12 meters between trees. In addition, a 40% discount rate is applied to account for technical limitations in certain areas where planting may not be feasible. This strategic planning aims to manage the existing tree resources more effectively over the next few years, with city officials optimistic about achieving tree planting goals.

Jean Brasil, the Superintendent of Works and Services and Head of the Department of Arborization and Plant Production in Curitiba, emphasizes that sustainable urban forest management can be realized through careful planning and resource management. The initiative reflects the city's dedication to enhancing its green spaces, which not only beautify the urban environment but also contribute to improved air quality and overall quality of life for residents.
