Prudente has over 200,000 trees, but 50% need to be replaced; residents can request planting
Residents of Presidente Prudente (SP) can request free tree planting to replace the 50% of the city's over 200,000 trees that need substitution.
In Presidente Prudente, São Paulo, there are over 200,000 trees, but the local government has reported that half of these trees must be gradually replaced due to health and sustainability concerns. To facilitate this process, the Municipal Secretariat of the Environment (Semea) is initiating the 'Disque Árvore' program, which will allow residents to request tree planting free of charge starting in March. This initiative aims to improve urban forestry and enhance the city's green spaces.
The program will enable residents to choose from a range of tree species suitable for planting on sidewalks, with different options available depending on whether there is overhead electrical wiring. For areas with electrical lines, residents can select varieties such as Aroeira Pimenta and Cerejinha do Rio Grande among others, while species like Ipê Branco and Jacarandá de Minas are recommended for locations without electrical interference. This diversity aims to ensure that the selected trees are not only aesthetically pleasing but also ecologically beneficial in the urban landscape.
As the program rolls out, it represents a significant step towards fostering community involvement in urban greening efforts, promoting biodiversity, and addressing environmental issues in Presidente Prudente. By allowing residents to take part in the planning and implementation of tree planting, the city hopes to cultivate a sense of ownership and responsibility towards the local environment, ultimately contributing to improved air quality and urban resilience against climate change.
