Pianist Amilton Godoy and harmonica player Gabriel Grossi showcase Villa-Lobos' heritage in an album with songs by Tom Jobim, Guinga, Johnny Alf, and Egberto Gismonti
Pianist Amilton Godoy and harmonica player Gabriel Grossi are releasing an album that celebrates the musical legacy of Villa-Lobos, featuring works by several influential Brazilian composers.
Amilton Godoy, a celebrated pianist and founder of the Zimbo Trio, will turn 85 on March 2, 2023, and celebrate this milestone with the release of his new album titled "Os filhos de Villa" on March 5. Collaborating with harmonica player Gabriel Grossi, the album is produced and arranged by Godoy himself. It consists of nine instrumental tracks that pay homage to Heitor Villa-Lobos, the quintessential figure of 20th-century Brazilian classical music.
Through this album, Godoy and Grossi not only highlight Villa-Lobos' musical influence but also bring attention to compositions from other notable Brazilian artists like Tom Jobim and Guinga, whose works reflect Villa-Lobos' innovative spirit. The tracks include original pieces by both musicians such as Godoy's "Choro" and Grossi's "De coração," ensuring a blend of tradition and contemporary interpretation that resonates with both long-time fans and new listeners alike.
The release of "Os filhos de Villa" serves as a reminder of the rich cultural tapestry in Brazilian music and the ongoing relevance of Villa-Lobos' legacy. As the album brings these select composers into the spotlight, it underlines the continuous evolution of Brazilian music, encouraging a new generation to engage with and be inspired by these timeless masterpieces.
