Rain in Minas: federal government will transfer money for the purchase of mattresses and supplies and advance Bolsa Família and BPC
The federal government of Brazil will provide funds to municipalities in Minas Gerais to assist families displaced by heavy rains with mattress and food purchases, while also advancing welfare payments.
On October 24, 2023, Brazilian Vice President Geraldo Alckmin announced that the federal government will allocate resources for municipalities in Minas Gerais affected by severe rainfall. This initiative is aimed at helping families who are currently displaced by the floods, with a focus on providing essential items such as mattresses and food supplies. Each municipality will receive a transfer of R$ 800 for each displaced person, facilitating immediate assistance to those in need.
During this announcement, Alckmin, who is acting as President during President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's absence, emphasized the government's commitment to immediate disaster response measures. He outlined the prioritized approach of saving lives, which includes support from the military and national health services, followed by efforts to shelter the displaced and eventually support recovery and infrastructure rebuilding in the affected areas. This framework indicates a structured response to a natural disaster that has put many families in precarious situations.
Furthermore, Alckmin stated that welfare payments under the Bolsa Família program and the Benefício de Prestação Continuada (BPC) will be advanced for all individuals affected. This financial support is critical for families trying to navigate through the difficulties posed by the disaster, ensuring that their basic needs are met while they recover from the impact of the floods. These actions reflect a focused response by the federal government to address immediate humanitarian needs in the context of natural disasters and social welfare management in Brazil, particularly in regions prone to such ecological crises.
