Uespi will have a program with scholarships to cover 200 subjects without teachers, announces government

The Piauí government announced a program to eliminate the shortage of teaching staff in 200 subjects at Uespi by providing scholarships for various teacher categories.

The government of Piauí has unveiled a new initiative aimed at addressing a significant shortfall of teachers for approximately 200 disciplines at the Universidade Estadual do Piauí (Uespi). Dubbed the Programa de Gestão Especial de Oferta (PGEO), this program will provide scholarships to active, retired, and visiting teachers, as well as qualified technical personnel. The government allocated R$ 3.2 million for this program, which is intended to operate on a semester basis across Uespi's 12 campuses.

Governor Rafael Fonteles announced the program on Monday, emphasizing the urgent need to fill these teaching vacancies to ensure that educational offerings are not compromised. In conjunction with the PGEO, he also revealed the appointment of over 47 permanent professors, which will increase Uespi’s total teaching staff to more than 1,000. This is viewed as a crucial step in responding to the educational demands of the institution and enhancing the overall quality of education.

The PGEO is a temporary measure designed to bridge the gap until a more sustainable solution can be implemented. Following appropriate adjustments, Uespi plans to offer a total of 3,621 courses in the first half of 2026. By addressing the shortage of qualified faculty, the program aims to ensure that students have access to qualified educators and comprehensive courses, thereby enhancing the institution's educational capacity and reputation within Brazil's higher education landscape.
