The neighborhood designed by V. Landsbergis-Zemkalnis is being reborn in Klaipėda

Reconstruction plans are underway for a historic two-story house in Klaipėda, designed by V. Landsbergis-Zemkalnis, with an emphasis on maintaining its structural integrity while modernizing its features.

A historic two-story house, marked with the first number on Jurginų Street and built in 1936, is set to undergo significant renovations. According to the reconstruction proposals, the main structural elements of the building are in good condition, although some steel beams affected by corrosion require attention. The renovation project aims to refresh the façade and roof slightly modifying the structure’s shape, as well as installing new skylights, balconies, and improving the interior spaces.

The building's current layout includes both office and residential spaces, as noted in a document prepared by Klaipėdos verslo centras, a company involved in real estate operations and leasing. Part of this reconstruction initiative is to honor the architectural heritage established by V. Landsbergis-Zemkalnis, whose designs once characterized many residential neighborhoods in Lithuania, including the Smeltė residential area where other houses built before World War II still stand.

This project is part of a broader effort to preserve and revitalize historical sites in Klaipėda, a city known for its architectural significance. By restoring this building, the city will not only retain its cultural history but may also attract tourism and new residents, fulfilling a key role in maintaining the urban landscape of the area while enhancing modern living standards within those historical walls.
