Unemployment in Amazonas closes 2025 at 8.4%, above the national average, says IBGE
The unemployment rate in Amazonas was reported at 8.4% for 2025, higher than the national average of 5.6%.
In 2025, Amazonas closed the year with an unemployment rate of 8.4%, significantly above Brazil's national average of 5.6%, according to data released by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE) on January 20. This rate has remained stable compared to 2024, marking Amazonas as one of the states with the highest unemployment rates in the country. The IBGE's findings include people aged 14 and older in any occupation, whether formally employed or not. It identifies individuals as unemployed if they have sought work in the 30 days preceding the interview. Overall, approximately 211,000 households are surveyed across all states and the Federal District to produce these statistics.
In the national unemployment ranking, Amazonas ranks among the states with the highest rates, trailing only behind Bahia, Pernambuco, and PiauΓ, which all report similar or higher unemployment figures. Nationally, 12 states demonstrated unemployment rates below the national average, while 15 states exhibited rates above it. Despite the national trend presenting the lowest unemployment figures since the statistical series began in 2012, Amazonas has not aligned with this positive development, highlighting regional disparities within the country.
This situation in Amazonas not only showcases the specific local economic challenges faced by the state but also draws attention to broader issues of employment and socioeconomic conditions in the northeastern region of Brazil. The consistency of a higher unemployment rate may indicate ongoing structural problems in the local job market, which could warrant targeted interventions or policy measures by state authorities to stimulate economic growth and create new job opportunities.
