Heavy rain causes flooding and material damage in several neighborhoods of Três Lagoas

Três Lagoas experiences heavy rainfall, leading to flooding and damage in several neighborhoods but no casualties.

On the night of February 24th, Três Lagoas, a city in the state of Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil, faced intense rainfall totaling up to 110 millimeters in some areas, causing significant flooding. The rain began around 1 a.m. and, while severe, did not bring strong winds. The Civil Defense authorities reported that the city has accumulated 187 millimeters of rain so far in February, signalling a particularly wet month. Currently, the Civil Defense is assessing the impacts, having addressed ten incidents related to the intense downpour, with particular focus on areas like Jardim Alvorada and Vila Nova which experienced notable flooding.

Despite the adverse weather conditions, reports indicate that only material damages were sustained, with no people displaced from their homes. The Central region and Santos Dumont neighborhood were also affected, witnessing severe flooding and runoff. Fortunately, three out of eighteen of the city’s containment basins were operational, helping to alleviate the situation, and continuous monitoring is underway to prevent further issues.

In response to the flooding, the Civil Defense team has been coordinated with the Fire Department to address the situation efficiently. Their efforts highlight the importance of emergency protocols in urban areas to manage the challenges posed by severe weather events, emphasizing preparedness in the face of increased rainfall, a recurring issue for cities in this region.
