31 Hotels and 3,700 Rooms in Tampere - Yet New Ones Are Being Planned at an Accelerating Pace

Tampere, Finland, is experiencing a surge in hotel development despite having a significant existing hotel capacity.

Tampere is Finland's third-largest hotel city in terms of room capacity, boasting 31 hotels with 3,700 rooms and 7,700 beds. Despite this substantial number, several new hotel projects are currently under consideration, including developments behind the central fire station, in the old Centrum building on Hämeenkatu, and in Tammela. Additionally, Sokos Hotels is planning to construct a new Torni hotel adjacent to an existing one, showing that the demand for hospitality services continues to grow in the city.

Major hotel chains observe the situation with some caution, acknowledging that while competition is intense, the outlook remains relatively balanced. Laura Tarkka, the country manager for the Scandic hotel chain, points out that Tampere's hotel projects have been in progress for a long time, indicating a steady interest in the region's hospitality sector. Despite the competitive landscape, there is a sentiment that the current hotel capacity can accommodate the market demands coming from the increasing attractiveness of the city to tourists and business travelers alike.

Mikko Kankaanpää, the business sector manager for Sokos and Radisson hotels in the Oulu and Tampere regions, rates the competition situation as tight but manageable. Hotel capacity in Tampere has increased by about 30 percent over the last decade, highlighting the city's growing appeal as a destination. As new projects emerge, local hotels continue to adapt, aiming to remain competitive in a market that shows no signs of slowing down.
