Tender of ₹75 lakh, yet the tent ruptured; DM canceled the weddings of 517 couples
In Hapur, a mass wedding ceremony organized by the Chief Minister was canceled due to severe mismanagement by a wedding firm, resulting in the blacklisting of the firm and cancellation of the event for 517 couples.
In Hapur's Ramleela ground, a mass wedding ceremony intended for 517 couples under a government scheme faced cancellation due to evident corruption and mismanagement by the wedding firm 'Mukul Weddings' from Meerut. Despite a ₹75 lakh tender awarded for the event, the preparations displayed severe deficiencies, leading the District Magistrate (DM) Abhishek Pandey to take decisive action not only against the firm but also against two contractors associated with the event.
The mass wedding was a part of the Chief Minister's Group Marriage Scheme aimed at supporting couples in Hapur district. However, upon inspection by the Chief Development Officer (CDO) Himanshu Gautam, it was found that the tents provided were torn and of poor quality, and the food for the event was deemed unacceptable. Following these findings, the CDO expressed his dissatisfaction and issued a notice to 'Mukul Weddings' requesting immediate improvements in service quality, but the situation escalated quickly.
After further reviews, the DM ordered the cancellation of the event late at night, showcasing a strong stance against corruption and mismanagement in public service events. This decision not only highlights the issues present in organizing government-sponsored events but also serves as a warning to private vendors who may compromise quality for profit. The incident raises significant discussions about accountability in public contracts and the need for stricter oversight of government expenditures.
