Speaker of the Saeima: Ukraine's resilience is an example for the world
Latvia's Saeima speaker highlights Ukraine's ongoing struggle against Russia, marking four years of conflict that has led to significant civilian casualties and displacement.
In a recent address, Inga Mieriņa, the Speaker of the Latvian Saeima, emphasized that the world has failed to halt the war in Ukraine over the past four years. She noted that 1461 days have passed since Russia launched its full-scale invasion, and despite this prolonged conflict, the aggressor has not achieved any of its strategic goals. Instead, the war has devastated and disrupted millions of lives, with this past year recording more civilian casualties than in previous years, including 2514 victims, among them 92 children.
Mieriņa pointed out the unprecedented scale of suffering caused by this conflict, stating that millions of people have lost their homes and more than five million Ukrainians are now refugees. She characterized the situation as an ongoing humanitarian catastrophe, unfolding before the eyes of the international community. The implications of this war extend beyond Ukraine, as the speaker articulated a need for global recognition of its toll on civilians and the urgent need for a resolution to prevent further suffering.
The speaker also condemned the Kremlin's regime for using propaganda, fear, and aggression to center the war around its ideology. Mieriņa asserted that the aggressor is unwilling to change and will utilize all means to regain international acceptance, including in fields such as culture and sports. This statement serves not only as a call to action for international solidarity with Ukraine but also a warning about the persistent dangers posed by aggressive regimes in the world.
