VIDEO: Extraordinary session of the Saeima in support of Ukraine and in memory of the fallen in war

The Latvian Saeima held an extraordinary session to express support for Ukraine and honor those who have fallen in the ongoing conflict.

The Saeima of Latvia convened an extraordinary session attended by notable figures including President Edgars Rinkēvičs, Speaker Daiga Mieriņa, and Ruslan Stefanchuk, the Chairman of the Ukrainian Parliament. This session aimed to express solidarity with the people of Ukraine and included various representatives from the foreign diplomatic community in Latvia as well as civil society members and entrepreneurs supporting Ukraine. In a symbolic gesture, the Saeima building will be illuminated in the colors of the Ukrainian flag during dark hours until February 25, reinforcing Latvia's commitment to aiding Ukraine during these tumultuous times.

During the session, the representatives discussed the implications of Russia's unprovoked invasion of Ukraine, which commenced on February 24, 2022. The Kremlin's initial promises to capture Kyiv within three days have been thwarted by the fierce resistance of the Ukrainian people. Since then, the conflict has seen various phases, including a Russian retreat from the Kyiv region and ongoing offensives in others. The session emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine amid the complex and evolving military landscape.

The gathering also reflected on the gradual changes in the war dynamics, where successful Ukrainian counter-offensives in the fall of 2022 and the uncertain progress of recent summer counterattacks were highlighted. The leaders reiterated the necessity of international assistance and collaboration as Ukraine continues to confront formidable challenges. The event underscores Latvia's position in rallying global support for Ukraine and fostering unity against aggression during the ongoing war.
