Seven million a month for the metro until 2 AM. And work begins on the M1 in Baggio
Milan's city council is considering extending metro hours to 2 AM on weekends, with projected costs between 6-7 million euros monthly, stressing the need for state funding to support this initiative.
The Milan city council has proposed extending metro service hours to 2 AM on weekends, which will remain in effect beyond the upcoming Winter Olympics. This plan was encouraged by a resolution passed in January, with the city council requesting an evaluation of usage and associated costs during the Olympics when additional metro services will be provided daily. Mobility advisor Arianna Censi emphasized the necessity of state support, as the estimated monthly expenditure of 6-7 million euros cannot be funded solely by local resources.
During the Olympic period from February 6 to 22, costs are expected to range between 9.2 and 9.4 million euros, covering additional transport options such as shuttles to the Arena Santagiulia. Censi has expressed her belief that extending metro hours is a worthy investment, while also highlighting the need for collaborative financial backing. This highlights a broader discussion about urban mobility and the adequacy of funding for city services during heightened demand periods such as the Olympics.
Mayor Beppe Sala is also in favor of the extended metro hours, indicating an alignment among city officials on the importance of improving accessibility to public transport during busy weekends. The complexity surrounding funding for these transport expansions underscores the challenges faced by local governments in Italy regarding urban mobility solutions and the need for sustainable financial policies to match growth in urban infrastructure demands.
