The Municipality pays the (first) damages from nightlife. And the committees study their moves tomorrow
The local government of Milan is set to compensate residents for noise pollution due to nightlife activities, as it faces legal consequences for exceeding noise level regulations.
The city of Milan is grappling with the repercussions of nightlife-related disturbances, as highlighted by the recent proposed budget to allocate €260,000 for compensating residents affected by excessive noise. This budget was presented by Public Works Councillor Marco Granelli, in light of two separate court rulings favoring local residents, which found that the municipality held some responsibility for noise levels that exceeded legal limits.
One significant case involves 34 residents from the Lazzaretto area who were awarded a total of €234,000 for noise violations recorded in 2022. Additionally, three residents from Corso Garibaldi 104 were granted €27,000 for disturbances dating back to between 2017 and 2021. Granelli clarified that the issues stemmed from events not authorized by the city; however, their liability as road proprietors was contested in court similar to cases in other cities like Brescia, Turin, and Naples.
This situation has prompted local committees to strategize their next steps in addressing the ongoing conflict surrounding nightlife disturbances. As Milan approaches a busy season for nightlife activities, resolving these disputes between resident comfort and vibrant nightlife will be crucial for the municipal authorities and local communities, potentially influencing future policies on urban nightlife and public health.
