Metro extends 24-hour operation for another six months on Saturday nights to Sunday mornings

São Paulo's Metro has announced a six-month extension of its 24-hour weekend service on select lines in the capital.

The São Paulo Metro has decided to extend its 24-hour operation on certain lines for an additional six months. This service, originally launched on December 6 of last year, runs from midnight to 4:40 AM on weekends, specifically impacting the Blue Line (1), Green Line (2), Red Line (3), and Silver Line (15). Trains operate at intervals of approximately 20 to 30 minutes, allowing all stations to remain open for boarding and alighting after midnight.

This ongoing service aims to accommodate night-time travelers in the capital, despite challenges in integrating with private lines such as the Yellow Line (4) or Purple Line (5). The private operators have previously expressed concerns over costs and insufficient passenger demand during these late hours, leading to a lack of connectivity with Metro's extended service. Therefore, despite Metro's efforts to provide continuous transit options, the complexities of the existing railway system pose limitations on full integration.

The decision to prolong the trial phase indicates a potential recognition of the need for improved night transportation in São Paulo, which is crucial as city services adapt to changing lifestyle patterns. The extension also serves as a test for the future of 24-hour operations, reflecting on accessibility and convenience issues that nighttime riders face, as the city continues to explore solutions to enhance public transport options.
