"With these war injuries, we become better surgeons." Latvian medics help wounded Ukrainians return to life
Latvian medical professionals are providing care to wounded Ukrainian soldiers to aid their recovery.
Latvian doctors are actively engaged in treating Ukrainian soldiers injured in the ongoing conflict. They have allocated a dedicated section in their hospital to accommodate six Ukrainian patients at a time, ensuring that their challenge of treating complex war injuries does not disrupt the care provided to local residents. This effort reflects a collaborative approach among medical staff and administration to manage both humanitarian needs and local healthcare demands.
Mārtiņš Malzubris, head of the Traumatology and Orthopedics hospital's rehabilitation unit, explained the careful measures in place to manage these patients due to the multi-resistant infections they carry. The unit has been specially set up with isolation protocols to minimize the risk of infection transmission. Medical staff are required to adopt stringent hygiene standards, including the removal of jewelry and unnecessary clothing during patient care to maintain a sterile environment.
The initiative highlights not only the medical expertise but also the moral responsibility felt by Latvian healthcare workers towards their Ukrainian counterparts. As they navigate through these challenges, the Latvian medics are not only helping individuals regain their health but are also enhancing their surgical skills and experience in handling severe traumatic injuries, thus contributing to their development as healthcare providers in a crisis environment.
