WKBL to Select Asian Quarter Players via Free Agency from Next Season

The women's professional basketball league in South Korea will switch to a free agency model for selecting Asian quarter players starting from the 2026-2027 season.

The Korea Women's Basketball League (WKBL) has announced a significant change in its player selection process during a recent board meeting. Beginning with the 2026-2027 season, the league will select Asian quarter players through a free agency system, rather than the previous draft method. This move is part of WKBL's efforts to enhance competitiveness by allowing a broader pool of players from nine countries, rather than just Japan, which had been the practice since the introduction of the Asian quarter in the 2024-2025 season. The countries included in the new selection process comprise Japan, the Philippines, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Thailand, Singapore, Mongolia, and Kazakhstan.
