Women's football wins 3-0 against the Philippines... Advances to the quarterfinals with two consecutive wins in the Asian Cup

The South Korean women's football team secured their place in the quarterfinals of the 2026 AFC Asian Cup by defeating the Philippines 3-0, marking their second consecutive win in the group stage.

The South Korean women's national football team, currently ranked 21st by FIFA, solidified their progress to the quarterfinals of the 2026 AFC Asian Cup after a decisive 3-0 victory over the Philippines, ranked 41st. This match, held on December 5 in Gold Coast, Australia, was their second group stage match, following a previous win against Iran earlier in the week. With this latest triumph, South Korea has secured second place in their group with 6 points, regardless of the outcomes of their remaining matches, and they are set to face Australia next.

Head coach Shin Sang-woo made significant changes to the lineup to address the issues identified after the game against Iran, notably the lack of goal-scoring efficiency. Unlike the first match where he relied on veteran players, this time he introduced a younger squad, with seven changes to the starting eleven. The strategy proved effective, as South Korea quickly gained control of the match, scoring their first goal just 15 minutes in, with Jeon Yu-kyung and Park Soo-jung both getting on the score sheet early, showcasing their attacking prowess.

Although the quarterfinals are confirmed, the competition for the top two spots in the group remains crucial. Finishing first in the group would mean an easier matchup against a third-placed team from either Group B or C, while a second-place finish could pit them against stronger sides like China or North Korea—teams with a formidable presence in women’s football. With their current momentum and a balanced team performance in the previous matches, the upcoming game against Australia will be critical for South Korea's aspirations in the tournament.
