Establishing a Habit of Donation: The Alūksnes and Apes District Fund Has Sent 117 Vehicles to Ukraine
The Alūksnes and Apes District Fund in Latvia has successfully sent 117 vehicles to support Ukrainians amidst their ongoing hardships.
The Alūksnes and Apes District Fund has established a strong culture of charity, especially towards the Ukrainian people, who are enduring significant challenges due to the ongoing conflict. Residents like Terēze express their willingness to help by donating money, demonstrating a community that has cultivated the habit of donating over many years. The fund's director, Dzintra Zvejniece, reflects on the community’s support going back to 2014, when the Russian annexation of Crimea and the unrest in Donbas began, and notes how this has become a part of the locals' identity.
Since the onset of the war in Ukraine in 2022, the fund has intensified its efforts, initially distributing essential supplies like bedding, dishes, and hygiene products, which were heavily requested during the humanitarian response. Zvejniece remarked on the overwhelming donations from locals, who have contributed tirelessly to assist around 2000 Ukrainians, some of whom relocated to Riga while others remained in Latvia. The generous donations highlighted a heartfelt uniformity in the community as they deemed it necessary to aid those in distress.
In addition to material support, the fund has been active in sending vehicles directly to the front lines. This initiative was inspired by activist Pāvels Čornijs, who continues to advocate for this cause. Since March 2022, they have focused on raising substantial funds to transport necessary vehicles to Ukraine. Through these efforts, the community of Alūksne shows a remarkable commitment to solidarity and support for those affected by the ongoing crisis in Ukraine, reinforcing the importance of community involvement during times of need.
