When You Suddenly Need a Place for Your Child... Extended Same-Day Reservations for Hourly Childcare Until 2 PM
South Korea's Ministry of Education has announced an extension of same-day reservations for hourly childcare services to 2 PM, along with improvements to the caregiver-to-child ratio.
The South Korean Ministry of Education has recently announced significant changes to its hourly childcare services, aimed at accommodating unexpected childcare needs. Starting this March, parents can make same-day reservations for hourly childcare services until 2 PM, an increase from the previous cutoff of 12 PM. This policy is particularly beneficial for families who may face sudden childcare demands. Additionally, a multi-child booking feature is set to be introduced later this year, addressing previous challenges faced by parents of multiple children in securing simultaneous spots.
As part of its initiative, the Education Ministry plans to reduce the caregiver-to-child ratio in these services from the current 3:1 to 2:1 in 64.4% of independent childcare classes, which amounts to 788 out of 1,224 planned classes this year. By 2028, the ministry aims for all independent classes to operate at this improved ratio. The reduction in the ratio is expected to enhance opportunities for interaction between caregivers and children, as well as increase safety by reducing the potential for accidents during childcare activities.
Parents can reserve hourly childcare services through the Child Love Portal or by calling the designated service number. In order to facilitate awareness and accessibility, the Education Ministry intends to distribute informational materials, such as a guide to the hourly childcare service and a parent usage manual, to childcare support centers by the end of this month. This initiative reflects the government's commitment to improving childcare options for families in South Korea, addressing both flexibility and quality of care.
