Increasing Supply of Specialized Public Rental Housing for Youth, Seniors, and Single-Parent Households
The South Korean government is expanding the supply of public rental housing tailored for youth, seniors, and single-parent households, aiming to provide customized caregiving, job, and welfare services.
The South Korean government announced on the 22nd that it will increase the supply of public rental housing tailored to specific demographics such as youth, seniors, and single-parent households. From March 23 to May 22, local governments and housing developers will be invited to apply for specialized housing projects that provide customized living spaces along with social welfare facilities, caregiving spaces, and shared offices. These specialized rental units will not only focus on providing housing but also include essential supportive services to meet the diverse needs of the target groups.
The specialized housing types are categorized into four types: regionally proposed specialized housing, welfare housing for seniors, youth-specific housing, and job-linked supported housing. Those selected in the application process will receive significant financial support from the Housing City Fund, covering 66% to 80% of construction costs. For instance, the welfare housing for seniors will include features like sliding bathroom doors and safety handrails, catering to the needs of older residents while integrating community welfare facilities.
The youth-specific housing will be designed for unmarried youth and college students, available in well-connected locations with built-in furniture and specialized support services. On the other hand, job-linked supported housing will provide shared offices and start-up centers to assist small business workers with housing costs, enhancing the overall quality of life for residents while addressing pressing societal issues related to aging, youth unemployment, and family support.
