Family Care Children and Youth to Receive Up to 2 Million Won in Self-Care Costs

Children and young adults who have sacrificed education and employment to care for sick family members can receive financial assistance of up to 2 million won under new regulations by the Ministry of Health and Welfare in South Korea.

The South Korean Ministry of Health and Welfare has approved a new regulation that will provide financial support of up to 2 million won for children and young adults aged 13 to 34 who have had to forego their education or job opportunities in order to care for sick family members. This assistance comes as part of the enforcement decree of the "Crisis Children and Youth Support Act," which aims to prevent social isolation and support the stability and independence of at-risk youth. The new regulation is set to take effect on the 26th.

Under this regulation, eligible applicants must submit requests to local government officials such as mayors or district chiefs, and will undergo a selection process along with consultations. The funding, termed "self-care costs," will be delivered in the form of vouchers that can be used for personal development, health management, and physical or mental recovery expenses, aimed at helping recipients prepare for their futures. The establishment of dedicated organizations to assist at-risk youth and children, including those confined or isolated, is also part of this initiative.

Additionally, dedicated agencies will be responsible for creating case management plans within 14 days of identifying support recipients, thereby ensuring tailored support based on individual needs and circumstances. The Minister of Health and Welfare stated that this regulatory framework lays a solid institutional foundation for the support of at-risk children and youth, and emphasized ongoing preparations to enhance support through designated organizations, self-care cost provisions, and certification of specialized support institutions.
