Cyber Hankuk University of Foreign Studies Completes PY2025 Fulbright ETA Korean Language Program
Cyber Hankuk University of Foreign Studies has successfully concluded its PY2025 Fulbright ETA Korean language program aimed at training American English teaching assistants.
Cyber Hankuk University of Foreign Studies recently held a completion ceremony for the PY2025 Fulbright ETA Korean language program, which was conducted under the auspices of the Fulbright Korea Education Committee. This program, which ran for four weeks starting in mid-January, trained 65 American English Teaching Assistants (ETAs) who will be placed in South Korean elementary, middle, and high schools. The program was designed and managed by Professors Jin Jeong-ran and Song Eun-jeong, featuring 80 hours of integrated Korean language classes supplemented by additional support programs like office hours.
The integrated Korean language classes focused on core grammar and vocabulary, allowing participants to engage in communicative tasks while enhancing their practical Korean language use through project-based presentations and role-playing activities. To facilitate better adaptation to South Korean school environments, the program introduced an immersive experience called 'CUFS Korean School', which mimicked real school elements such as principals, vice-principals, classrooms, and teaching materials, enabling ETAs to practice in a realistic setting. Additionally, themed supplemental classes covering topics such as Hanja, cultural aspects like K-Pop and Korean customs were incorporated to bolster learning during office hours, fostering natural communication experiences.
During the completion ceremony held on February 12th, participants presented group projects and received their certificates. One participant shared their positive experience, stating that the four-week program helped build confidence in speaking Korean and connect with peers from diverse backgrounds. Professor Jin Jeong-ran, the lead researcher for the program, commented on the program's success in equipping participants with essential Korean communication skills and cultural understanding, despite its brief duration.
