Sanna discovered the municipality's AI mistake: 'Belittling'

Sanna Laakso identified an erroneous representation of the flag meant to commemorate the Finnish-Swedish community in an Emmaboda municipality event poster created using AI.

Sanna Laakso, a member of the Finnish-Swedish community living in Emmaboda, Sweden, quickly recognized an error in a poster designed by the municipality for an event celebrating 'Finnish-Swedish Day'. She reached out to the municipality after noticing that the AI-generated graphic featured the wrong flag. Despite assurances from the municipality that they would cease using the flawed design, Laakso noted that the incorrect poster was still in circulation as recently as Friday when she spoke with SVT News.

The issue arose from the municipality's choice to use AI technology to create the visual elements of the poster. Unfortunately, this led to the production of an incorrect flag representation, highlighting a lack of oversight in verifying the accuracy of the designs. Susanna Engelholm, the secretary-general of Emmaboda municipality, remarked that the municipality has recognized the Finnish-Swedish flag since 2024 and should have ensured that the representation adhered to established standards.

In recent years, Emmaboda municipality has been focused on efforts to recognize Sweden's five minority groups, with Laakso actively participating in these initiatives. Consequently, she expressed her disappointment over the municipality's negligence in accurately portraying the community, including the omission of a crucial symbol for Jewish communities. Laakso's experience raises questions about the reliance on AI for cultural representations and the importance of inclusive and accurate representation in public materials.
