Non-fiction author outraged by careless use of AI when her book's image ended up in a dance advertisement in Joensuu
A Finnish author expressed outrage over the use of her likeness in an AI-generated advertisement without her consent.
Henna Karppinen-Kummunmäki, a Finnish non-fiction author, was surprised to receive a message from her mother about an advertisement posted on the Joensuu city website, which featured what her mother clearly identified as her image. In the advertisement, a cartoon-like drawing showed the author dancing with her ex-husband on a dance floor, and it was noted that the image had been created using artificial intelligence. Karppinen-Kummunmäki believes that the AI-generated image was based on a photo published in her debut work in 2020.
Karppinen-Kummunmäki took to social media to voice her concerns regarding the unauthorized use of her image, stating that it appeared to have been inputted into an AI tool like ChatGPT to produce a drawing version of herself. Following her social media post, the image used in the advertisement was changed. The ad was initially created by the local Lions Club Puukello, and a representative later expressed apologies to Karppinen-Kummunmäki for the incident.
This incident sheds light on the ongoing debate surrounding the ethical implications of AI in creative fields, particularly the responsibility of individuals and organizations when utilizing technology to create representations of people without their consent. Karppinen-Kummunmäki mentioned having heard about similar instances elsewhere, highlighting a growing concern that broader awareness and understanding of AI's implications are necessary to prevent unauthorized reproductions in the future.
