Heavy rains in Cuiabá affected eight neighborhoods, causing flooding and a crocodile sighting, as reported by the city hall.
On Sunday, October 22, heavy rains impacted eight neighborhoods in Cuiabá, the capital of the state of Mato Grosso, Brazil, according to reports from the local government. The rainfall exceeded 100 mm, leading to significant flooding in streets and health facilities, and even resulted in the sighting of a juvenile crocodile in a nearby creek. The neighborhoods affected include Pedregal, São Mateus, Areão, Altos da Glória, Carumbé, Jardim Florianópolis, Campo Verde, and Despraiado.
Among the neighborhoods, Pedregal experienced the most severe issues, with twelve homes reported to have been affected by the rainwater. Critical facilities, including the UPA Leblon health unit and the Municipal Hospital and Emergency Department, also faced challenges due to flooding; however, officials confirmed that no patients were harmed. Prompt action was undertaken by city maintenance teams, who were deployed immediately to address the flooding and prevent further complications.
The municipal government reported that trucks were sent out to assist in water removal efforts from the streets and public health facilities. This proactive approach highlights the city’s commitment to ensure public safety and restore normalcy as quickly as possible in the aftermath of such adverse weather conditions. The incident underscores the need for ongoing improvements in urban infrastructure to better handle extreme weather events, particularly in vulnerable neighborhoods.
