Five families lose furniture and food after heavy storm in Cuiabá
Five families in Cuiabá lost their furniture and food supplies following a heavy storm that struck the city on Sunday night, with significant rainfall overwhelming drainage systems.
On the night of Sunday, September 22nd into the early hours of Monday, September 23rd, Cuiabá experienced a severe storm that impacted at least five families, causing significant losses of furniture and food supplies. According to the municipal government, a total of 12 homes were affected, although not all of them suffered severe damage. The storm resulted in an impressive amount of rainfall, with 100 millimeters recorded in just two hours, which placed considerable stress on the city's drainage infrastructure, leading to localized flooding.
Humanitarian aid has been deployed to assist the most affected families, which received emergency supplies like basic food baskets, mattresses, and hygiene kits. The neighborhoods most impacted include Pedregal, where three homes required immediate humanitarian assistance due to their low-lying locations, causing them to collect runoff water. Additionally, in Carumbé, a small apartment sustained losses, while in Areão, three houses were flooded with one home suffering considerable damage. Despite the seriousness of the storm, some areas, like São Mateus, saw the local creek overflow without causing flooding to residential properties, illustrating the varying impacts of the storm across different regions.
This event highlights the ongoing challenges that urban areas like Cuiabá face with extreme weather patterns, exacerbated by drainage system inadequacies. As cities increasingly grapple with climate-related occurrences, issues surrounding infrastructure resilience and community preparedness for such events remain critical talking points for local authorities and policymakers.
