They Will Not Let “Somos MX” Through

The political landscape in Mexico is witnessing the emergence of new forces, particularly the quickly advancing political group Somos MX, which seeks to capitalize on public discontent with traditional options.

In Mexico's increasingly polarized political environment, new forces like Somos MX are beginning to emerge. This group has been working diligently to establish itself as a national political party, motivated by the growing discontent among citizens who feel unrepresented by traditional political options. Their origins are linked to the Marea Rosa movement, indicating a strong ideological base focused on addressing the concerns of a significantly disaffected populace.

Somos MX has not come about by chance; according to its promoters, the group has satisfied all necessary requirements set forth by the National Electoral Institute. These requirements include holding assemblies in at least 20 states or 200 districts, achieving a minimum membership of 0.26% of the electoral roll, enrolling at least 3,000 members per state or 300 per district, and successfully conducting a Constituent National Assembly. The latter has already taken place, showcasing robust participation and culminating in the leadership of Guadalupe Acosta and Cecilia Soto.

The emergence of Somos MX signals a shift in the Mexican political landscape, where traditional parties have struggled to connect with the electorate. Its rapid progress suggests that it may tap into the sentiments of voters seeking alternatives to established political options. As the group continues to develop, it raises important questions about the future of political representation in Mexico and the potential for increased competition among parties as the 2024 elections approach.
