Somos MX submits its electoral reform proposal to deputies
The organization Somos MX presented its electoral reform proposal to the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Kenia López, proposing an open parliament to discuss various political initiatives.
On Monday, the organization Somos MX delivered its proposal for electoral reform to Kenia López, the president of the Chamber of Deputies in Mexico. They called for an open parliament to allow discussion of various initiatives among all interested political actors. The proposal is comprehensive, outlining 25 key points focused on enhancing the integrity of electoral processes in Mexico.
One of the most significant points in the proposal is the suggestion that political parties lose their registration if found to have received funding from drug trafficking organizations. Emilio Álvarez Icaza emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue, stating that efforts must be made to prevent the interference of drug cartels in elections—not just through funding, but also in the voting process itself. He cited previous instances of candidates who allegedly benefited from illegal financing, highlighting the need for a strong and credible electoral authority to combat the influence of violence and organized crime in Mexico's democratic processes.
The proposed reform aims not only to address past issues but also to establish a more robust framework for Mexican elections that would safeguard democratic integrity. By engaging various political entities in open discussions, Somos MX seeks to create a consensus on how to eliminate the detrimental impacts of drug violence from electoral participation, ultimately fostering a healthier political landscape in Mexico.
