Administrative technicians from UFPI and UFDPar go on indefinite strike this Monday (23)
Administrative technicians from the universities UFPI and UFDPar in Brazil have initiated an indefinite strike due to unmet agreements regarding their working conditions.
Administrative technicians from the Federal University of Piauí (UFPI) and the Federal University of Delta do Parnaíba (UFDPar) have gone on an indefinite strike starting this Monday, the 23rd. According to the Workers' Union in Federal Universities in Piauí (Sintufpi), the strike was triggered by the failure to implement the agreement reached in 2024 regarding their demands, which has resulted in no substantial progress on their issues. The union emphasizes the importance of this action in the context of their rights as workers, highlighting that the strike is a legitimate form of protest protected by the Brazilian Constitution.
In response to the strike, UFPI has acknowledged that the movement is part of a national trend and is evaluating potential adjustments to the university's operations. Meanwhile, UFDPar has announced that while they respect the workers' right to strike, they will ensure that essential services, including the University Restaurant and teaching laboratories, continue to function. This decision aims to mitigate the impact on students and academic activities, while still recognizing the protesting workers' grievances.
The technicians' demands focus on several key issues such as career advancement, the need for democratic management within the university, decent working conditions, and the combat against harassment in the workplace. The union asserts that these issues are fundamental for the technicians' well-being and their ability to contribute effectively to the universities, indicating a broader struggle for enhanced labor rights and conditions in the Brazilian educational sector.
