LRT working group agreed on proposed changes: a Board would be established, the number of Council members would change

A working group has proposed changes to the LRT Council structure, including an increase in the number of members and the establishment of a Board.

A recent proposal by a working group at LRT involves significant changes to the structure of the LRT Council, suggesting it be comprised of 15 individuals from various sectors such as society, science, and culture, appointed for a six-year term. Under the current system, four members are appointed by the president and four by the Seimas. However, the proposed changes would increase the number of appointees from organizations from four to seven, allowing greater representation from several key organizations, while also introducing three new appointing organizations.

The changes aim to ensure a more extensive and diverse representation within the Council, with the inclusion of the Lithuanian Communities Organization Union, the Tripartite Council, and a representative for organizations of persons with disabilities, which indicates a commitment to inclusivity and representation of underrepresented groups. The qualifications for Council members are set to include Lithuanian citizens of impeccable reputation, holding a university degree with a master's qualification or equivalent, and possessing five years of experience in management, administration, scientific, media, or cultural fields.

These proposed modifications aim not only to enhance the governance of LRT but also to strengthen its accountability and transparency, responding to public and governmental expectations for better representation within public broadcasting. The introduction of a Board and the restructuring of Council membership could lead to improved operational standards and a more robust public service framework for Lithuanian media, thereby fostering trust and collaboration among various sectors in society.
