The working group plans to decide on the functions of the LRT council and board, as well as the implementation timeline for amendments
A working group in Lithuania is set to discuss the establishment of a new management body for the national broadcaster and the associated amendments to the LRT council's functions.
In Lithuania, a working group is preparing to make decisions regarding the management structure of the national public broadcaster, LRT. The group previously agreed on the necessity of creating a new governing body, which would include a board responsible for overseeing LRT's functions. On Tuesday, the group will consider the timeline for the implementation of proposed amendments, reflecting both the opposition's views and those of the Speaker of the Seimas, Juozas Olekas, who stated that changes regarding the dismissal of the LRT Director should only take effect with the new term of that position.
The working group has a deadline to prepare amendments to the LRT law by February 24, ahead of the upcoming spring session of the Seimas, which begins on March 10. Among the proposed changes is an increase in the number of council members from 12 to 15 and the establishment of a supporting office for the board. There is also a proposal to limit the number of terms served by the LRT Director while retaining the current threshold of two-thirds majority voting required for their dismissal, ensuring that these governance changes align with broader accountability expectations within national public broadcasting.
These developments illustrate ongoing efforts in Lithuania to reform the public broadcasting sector, aiming to enhance its governance and adaptability in the modern media landscape. The scrutiny and involvement of various political representatives, including the opposition, underscore the significance of this initiative and its potential impact on LRT's operational integrity and public trust in its reporting.
