The working group reviewing LRT governance plans to complete its work

A working group in Lithuania is finalizing proposals to revise the governance structure of the national broadcaster LRT, including defining its mission and expanding its governing council.

A working group dedicated to reviewing the governance of the national broadcaster, LRT, is nearing the completion of its recommendations, with key decisions left regarding the implementation dates. According to member Indrė Kižienė, the group has already outlined several significant proposals aimed at enhancing LRT's mandate, which is currently not explicitly defined in existing law.

One of the primary recommendations is to establish a new governing body for LRT—specifically a board—and to expand the council from 12 to 15 members. Notably, additional representatives are expected to be appointed by organizations representing individuals with disabilities, as well as from local community organizations and the Tripartite Council. Furthermore, the working group is proposing new eligibility criteria for council members, ensuring that they possess a minimum of five years of experience in fields such as management, administration, media, or culture.

The group's discussions also included measures to limit the involvement of representatives from other media outlets in the creation of content for LRT, aiming to avoid conflicts of interest and ensure the independence of the national broadcaster. These proposed changes reflect an ongoing effort to strengthen the governance framework of LRT, with the intent of enhancing its role and functionality in the Lithuanian media landscape.
